Day 30: Facebook

Just 10 more days left for our Family History Challenge.  I hope it has been a success so far.  I'd love to hear your stories, feel free to post any comments on one of your favorite posts from this series.  Today, we are going to talk about how to use Facebook in your family history research.

Even if you haven't jumped onto the Facebook bandwagon, you might want to do that now.  Facebook is a great tool to use in finding your living relatives to help you find your ancestors and strengthen the ties of your family still on earth.  You will need to create a "group" on facebook and you can set it up to be a "private" page which means that only those members that you invite to join your group can see what is going on.  I began a facebook group for my Italian side of my family it is called "Basso Chiotti Family."  It has been a huge blessing.  Growing up, I didn't know any of my grandfather's nieces and nephews and I only remember ever meeting one of his 7 brothers.  Since beginning the facebook page, I have found many of my great uncles children and grandchildren.  It has been amazing to connect and share stories about our common ancestors.  I hit the jackpot when I found one of my cousins who still lives in the same town where my grandfather grew up in Michigan.  He also is an editor of the local newspaper in the same town! Here's an article he wrote after we connected on facebook.

Today's challenge?  Start a facebook group, add the last names of your great grandparents or any other relatives that you would like to find descendants of.  Good luck!
