About “Scarlet”
The roads in and out of Paris are heavily guarded, but the dead have easy passage out of the city. A ragged old woman transports the coffins of the most recent victims of the guillotine and is waved on unimpeded. Later, the same crone watches five French aristocrats step out of their coffins unscathed. Not beheaded but spirited away to safety by that most elusive of spies: the Pimpernel. Jen Geigle Johnson discovered her love for uncovering fascinating pieces of history while kayaking on the Thames near London as a young teenager. My Review
Another awesome book by Jen Johnson! If you haven’t had a chance to read her book titled “The Nobleman’s Daughter,” you don’t want to miss it. Read my review here. Scarlet took me a few chapters to get into it. I read really fast, but I needed to slow down on this one to read every word or I was getting lost. It was an intriguing book that started to pull me in for a great ride. The life of Scarlet was definitely a challenging one as she played many roles to help the people. She rescues a man named Comte Matteo Durand and a romance blossoms.
This novel is based around the French Revolution and it isn’t a pretty picture. The story portrays some of the darker and evil side of human nature. It is hard to swallow sometimes what a person will do to others. The lighter side of Scarlet when she plays the “featherbrained young widow” helps to lighten the mood a bit and the romance definitely adds a positive note to a sad tale. All in all a great, well-written novel by Jen. Grab your copy today.
