Scripture Reading Challenge

My younger children are all part of one of the largest children organizations in the world called Primary.  It is a place where children 18 months until they turn 12 learn about Jesus Christ and His gospel on Sunday.  I have so many wonderful memories of attending primary with my friends and learning more about Jesus Christ.  I still remember some of my great teachers and singing leaders that shared their love for me which made it easier for me to get a glimpse into what Christ must feel for me.  Now that I am older, I love being able to teach the children and experience their great faith in God.

LDS Philadelphia Temple Ground Breaking

In 2011, when we lived in Pennsylvania, I was in the Primary Presidency when we discussed ways we could help the primary children get ready for the ground breaking of the Philadelphia Temple in September of that same year.  I will never forget that meeting with the other wonderful leaders I was able to serve with as we prayed and pondered what we should do.  The idea of "A Page A Day, Helps the Spirit Stay" was the inspiration we received that night.  Here is part of the letter we sent to the families of the primary children:

"The Primary Presidency would like to invite you and your family to join us on a daily scripture journey. The primary children and their families are encouraged to read a page a day in the scriptures. We have created for you a scripture jar titled “A Page A Day, Helps the Spirit Stay!” Inside you will find 100 Topical Guide topics. The idea is for you to put the jar as well as your scriptures in the center of the table where your family has their meals. As we feast upon our meals, we invite you to also “feast upon the words of Christ; for behold, the words of Christ will tell you all things what ye should do.” (2 Nephi 32:3) Have the children take turns drawing a paper slip from the jar everyday and then use the Topical Guide to look up the word and pick a scripture/story to study. It is a great way to study the scriptures by topic and bring the scriptures to life for your children. Our hope is that every primary child will read at least a verse a day and then their siblings and parents can finish the page or story. Even if your child can not read yet, they can still repeat a few words at a time as you read to them from the scriptures. This is a precious time for you to be guardians of our Father’s children and He has placed great trust in us as parent’s on earth…  Elder L. Tom Perry said, 'May the Lord bless each of us with the desire to study and know and grow in a knowledge of the scriptures. May you find them to be a guide and a source of power. May they direct you to the eternal good that we are all seeking here in mortality and in the worlds to come. I promise you that the scriptures will lead you to life eternal.' (The Scriptures and the Restoration, Nov 2, 2003)"
